Devashayani Ekadashi marks as a very spiritually significant day in the hindu calendar- it is believed that from this day onwards, Lord Vishnu attains the state of cosmic sleep or yoga nidra- a meditative state of pure consciousness.
Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the Universe, the symbolism of consciousness and pure love of our mind from this day settles on his seat or shayya of Sheshnaag- the thousand faced snake, his companion, who is a symbolism of desires and ego. This divine slumber takes place in the deep cosmic ocean of material wealth, known as Kshirsagar, once from where Amrit and Laxmi were churned out by Samudra Manthan.
Lord Vishnu, the pure representative of saguna, takes his time of around four months to switch to this state of deep contemplation called Yoganidra, a state of complete surrender to the Universe. This four month period is called as Chaturmasa, where no auspicious activities or beginnings are performed as per our traditions. This indicates that this is a period of deep introspection, with somewhat withdrawal from hyperactivity, and a time to relax and delve into the self.
It is the time for our consciousness to deeply relax with our desires, our ego, our materialistic reality at a convention and analyse and acknowledge the purpose and the needs of our self. Undoubtedly, this is the perfect time to master your skills, to establish your ideals and beliefs, to smoothly streamline the systems and processes of your life and body. This is the ideal time to do your Sadhna, perhaps the most effective form of reaching to the Self.
