Story Behind Raksha Bandhan
The Tale of Mahabali and Lord Vishnu
In ancient times, King Mahabali, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, was blessed with the Lord’s protection, causing Vishnu to leave his heavenly abode, Vaikuntam. Missing her husband, Goddess Lakshmi disguised herself as a Brahmin woman and sought refuge in Mahabali’s kingdom.
On Shravan Purnima, Lakshmi tied a rakhi on Mahabali’s wrist, symbolizing protection and love. When she revealed her true identity, Mahabali, deeply touched, requested Vishnu to return to Vaikuntam with Lakshmi.
Honoring Mahabali’s wish, Vishnu agreed, blessing the king and his kingdom. This act of love and devotion led to the tradition of sisters tying rakhis on their brothers’ wrists on Shravan Purnima, symbolizing protection and familial bonds.
